A BOOK REVIEW!

Simon’s Cat
by Simon Tofield

Thoughts Before The Review: We were very excited to hear that Simon Tofield was working on a comic book about his cat. His short films on YouTube are hilariously funny and have been on our favorite list for years now. The films are very well done, so we expect his book to be more of the same...

The Book: 240 pages of vignettes featuring Simon’s Cat during a typical day around the house and outside and his interactions with Simon, his owner and other characters

Review: Tofield has a way of drawing you into the scenes played out across the pages and allowing you to “hear” as well as see what’s going on. Set up much like his short videos on YouTube, the book has no dialogue, which makes it a fun book to sit and enjoy with young children as well as adults. Simon’s cat, who remains nameless as of late, befriends a garden gnome and is constantly trying to coerce him into capturing the neighborhood birds and fish from the pond. Clearly, this is a “cat-lover’s book” because when Simon’s sister’s dog is introduced, the dog is portrayed as an annoyance to Simon’s cat but that’s not to say dog lovers won’t get a chuckle out of this book either! Tofield’s imagination is displayed in the cat’s clever ploys to snack on birds, fish, buggies, and naturally, his dinner! One scene in particular left us doing that good belly laugh...

It’s dark outside. Simon’s cat is holding a lit flashlight and aiming it at his face where you see his mouth is gaping wide. He’s hoping that the light shining into his mouth will attract moths that will unknowingly fly right into his clever trap!

“I would totally do something like that” –Timothy Dickens

“I know... that’s what makes me laugh so hard!” –Momma

Conclusion: At a reasonable price, “Simon’s Cat” makes a great gift for any cat lover. We know our copy of the book will remain on the fireplace as a conversation piece for those looking for a quick laugh.

Momma: Two Thumbs Up for charm and whit :)

Timothy Dickens: Four Paws Up for representing us poodins in a light-hearted and clever way!
